Nature Allied Psychotherapy is part of a growing movement to bring therapy back into the natural world. Unlike many forms of ecotherapy, which tend to focus on short-term or one-off experiences, Nature Allied Psychotherapy offers a grounded framework for ongoing, in-depth psychotherapeutic work.
At its heart, this approach recognises nature as an active participant in the therapeutic process rather than a passive backdrop. Sessions take place outdoors, where the rhythms, textures and unpredictability of the natural environment become part of the conversation between client and therapist. Together, they explore not only the client’s human relationships but also their personal connection with the natural world — a relationship that can hold deep insights into belonging, resilience and healing.
This practice is informed by both psychological theory and traditional knowledge systems that have long understood the restorative power of the natural world. It invites a continuous dialogue between client, therapist and nature, opening the possibility for transformation through connection, awareness and presence.
Alongside his Doctorates in Clinical and Educational Psychology, Dr. Urquhart is finishing up a programme to become a certified Nature Allied Psychotherapist. If you're interested in a session with him, reach out here:
